McCook to abate property taxes

The McCook Village Board approved abating its portion of the property tax levy when it met on Oct. 3, Mayor Terry Carr said.
“You don’t get refunds, but your taxes reflect the lower rate,” Carr said.
That should be a reduction of some sort for residents, he said.
“It should be a couple of hundred thousand dollars worth of abatements, so it should be sizable,” he said. “I can’t tell you what the county is going to do, but the village of McCook portion will be less.”
“We have enough money that we don’t have to levy it all, so we’re going to abate some of it,” Carr added.
In other business, the village board approved spending no more than $12,250 to pressure wash the water tower.
Pressure Washing Inc., based in Cicero, was hired, Carr said.
And the board authorized a Class 7A property tax break for a vacant building at 4820 W. Joliet Road.
“There’s nothing there now. We’re trying to entice people to come, help them out to get them to come,” Carr said.
The empty warehouse had been home to the former Dillon Cartage, which closed more than a year ago, he said.
“We’re trying to revive the property,” Carr said. “This helps them with the (property) taxes.”
