Strengthen Social Security, Chuy says

U.S. Rep. Jesús “Chuy” García (D-4th) recently marked the 87th Anniversary of Social Security with at a roundtable at a suburban senior citizens center.
García provided a federal update, shared resources and said he learned from seniors about their experiences with Social Security.

Several Republicans have recently floated proposals to modify Social Security, which García claimed would disproportionately hurt women and people with disabilities, as well as Latino and black communities.
“In my district nearly 77,000 people receive Social Security benefits every year,” García said. “Most of them are retirees, people with disabilities and children. People pay into this program throughout their lives and should be able to receive their checks.
“Social Security became law 87 years ago, but it’s been 50 years since Congress enhanced it, and improvements are long overdue,” he continued. “That’s why I support Social Security 2100: A Sacred Trust Act. I want to make sure this program serves our country well for years to come.”
The Social Security 2100 Act is designed to improve and expand coverage by:
- Increasing benefits for beneficiaries;
- Improving the annual Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) formula to better reflect actual expenses;
- Expanding benefits for widows/widowers and dependents;
- Extending the solvency of Social Security, including by making the wealthy pay the same rate as everyone else.
