Are you ready to go plogging? Yes, plogging is a combination of jogging and picking up garbage. If you live in the area of 54th and Avers, next Saturday, Aug. 13, bring a garbage bag, gloves and/or grabber and clean up the neighborhood. The scheduled meeting time is 10 a.m.
There are new stops signs installed at 59th and Springfield. This makes that corner a four-way stop. That certainly will help the families with children crossing the street on their way to school. I just wonder how traffic will be.

Chicago Public Library branches are hiring a “Teacher in the Library” for the 2022-2023 school year. This person will work in the library to help students complete homework assignments, increase confidence and motivate them.

One of the most challenging yet rewarding volunteer projects I undertook was being a catechist for a few years back. I would work hard on preparing my lessons and spend an even more difficult 1.5 hours in the classroom each Wednesday. But at the end of each Wednesday, it felt good to do something that may shape a young person’s future.

Happy Belated birthday to Father Jack from St. Turibius. He celebrated at the parish on July 25. Thereafter, the St. Vincent de Paul Society’s food pantry held Christmas in July. Bags and bags of food were distributed to those of the parish in need. Special thanks to the teenagers of the parish who helped in the distribution.
The food of the month for August is bags or boxes of white rice. The donations can be placed in the box at the vestibule of the church or brought to the rectory during business hours.
Happy Birthday to Maria, in the middle of our block–or as we refer to her, Mrs. Juan. She had a lovely party, also on the 25th. It was a chance for the neighbors to get together for a good time.
Some of us didn’t know Spanish and some of us didn’t know English; but by the end of the night, somehow, we all spoke the same language. It reminded me of days gone by when all the neighbors would gather on warm summer nights. It also reminded me I need to go back on Babble and Duolingo to brush up on what little Spanish I know.
