Open house is almost here

I hope to see some of my 23rd Ward neighbors that live close to Pulaski at 3954 W. 63rd St. on Saturday, July 16. That is when our alderman, Silvana Tabares, hosts the grand opening of her satellite office.
The event starts at 10 a.m. and runs until noon. Refreshments will be served. There will also be some artwork showcased. If you haven’t done so already, please RSVP at ward23@cityofchicago.org, or simply call like I did at (773) 582-4444. There will be parking available in the rear lot off Pulaski.

Well, it’s after the 4th so “back to school” is in the air. There will be a back-to-school event in Archer Heights. The Salvation Army’s Xmas in July event will be held on Saturday, July 23 starting at 10 a.m. The location is 5036 W. 47th St. The Salvation Army Midway Citadel will be providing backpacks, free books and schools supplies on a first come basis There will also be snacks, games and paid “public health ambassadors” providing test kits and vaccine information.
The St. Vincent De Paul Society chapter at St. Turibius Parish has a food pantry that is changing its hours. It will now be open two evenings a month, the second and fourth Monday from 6 to 7 p.m. The Saturday morning pantry is canceled.
The pantry is conducted in the parking lot. The pantry is there for parishioners in need of food. If you would like to make a donation, this month the pantry is collecting boxes of powdered or dry milk. You can place the donation in the vestibule of the church, or at the rectory during normal business hours.
There are a few birthdays to celebrate this up-and-coming week. Happy birthday to Nancy Majka on the 16th, Ann Jedlowski on the 17th and Mary Lynn Chyba on the 19th.
Social media has a lot of pitfalls but it is also a great way to connect with friends from the past. That is how I met Nancy Majka. Nancy’s husband, Larry, is friends with our cousin, Larry Stanek. Somehow, we became friends.
The tie that bound us together was all the fellows attended St. Bruno School. Nancy and Larry Majka, cousin Larry and my husband (along with our dogs) shared a few beers at the dog-friendly brewery Buckledown on 47th Street. All reminisced about St. Bruno’s, the fellows being altar boys and the neighborhood. We look forward to doing it again soon.
