On the hunt for cookbooks

It is finally here – Daylight Savings Time, starting this Sunday morning. We then have National Pi Day, and we will be celebrating St. Patrick’s Day this week. And just to mention a pint of Guinness has only 210 calories – and that is a pint. It is so worth the wait for a good pour.
The month of March is also Women’s History Month, set aside to honor women’s contributions to American history.

I’m on the lookout for yet another cookbook. This one was requested by Ted down the block. In the late ‘60s the sisters of Lourdes High School put together a cookbook with many a great recipe. By any chance do any of you have the book? If so, please give me a call.
I am still looking for the St. Bruno cookbook as well. I so regret throwing it out in haste.
Speaking of books, I would like to thank Gabriel, our mailman and the best mailman around, for letting us borrow a book. It’s Kathleen Headley’s Images of America Chicago Lawn/Marquette Manor, and it is quite a treasure. I could look at the pictures and read their stories all day.
Since it is Women’s History Month, my thoughts turn to women in our community, and their strengths. Kathleen’s book speaks of many strong women that helped shape our neighborhoods. There is great history with the Sisters of St. Casimir within the Marquette Park community. The SSC Motherhouse served as a novitiate and the St. Casimir Academy for girls. But with a growing enrollment, Maria High School opened in 1952. There are awesome pictures of the students taking their “Household” courses and working in the “Domestic Science Laboratory.”
Twenty-third Ward Ald. Silvana Tabares’ office is having a Ukraine aid drive running through March 31. Please donate essential items such as first aid kits, hygiene products, baby products, socks and blankets. The ward office is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The students of St. Bruno and Richard School gave back to the community. They made snack packages and distributed them to first responders at the Chicago Lawn (8th) District Police HQ at CFD and Engine 34.
